For a formula-feeding family, this single benefit usually dwarfs everything else WIC provides. It also causes the most confusion at the register — because WIC does not cover "formula" in the abstract, it covers your state contract brand, in the sizes and amounts on your card.
The contract brand rule
- Every state signs a rebate contract with one manufacturer — commonly Similac, Enfamil or Gerber depending on the state. That brand is what your card approves.
- This is why a formula that works in one state may not be covered across the border: the contract differs, not the rules.
- Your clinic tells you the exact brand, type and can size at certification — and the state WIC app scans barcodes so you know before checkout.
How much formula you get
- Amounts follow federal food package rules by age (0-3 months, 4-5 months, 6-11 months) and feeding category (fully formula-fed, partially breastfed, fully breastfed).
- Fully formula-fed infants receive the maximum monthly allotment; partially breastfed infants receive a reduced amount alongside the mother's enhanced food package.
- From 6 months, infant cereal and baby food fruits/vegetables are added; formula continues until the first birthday.
Specialty and medical formula
- Talk to your pediatrician about the medical need (allergy, reflux, prematurity, metabolic conditions).
- They complete the state medical documentation form — the clinic provides it, and this is routine paperwork, not a fight.
- The clinic updates your benefits; specialty formulas are covered when documented, including many that cost far more than standard.
When the shelf is empty
- Try other stores and sizes first — your card usually approves several can sizes of the contract brand.
- Call your clinic: during shortages, states issue waivers letting you buy alternate brands or sizes temporarily. This is the step most families skip.
- Never dilute formula to stretch it, and avoid homemade formula — both are dangerous. The clinic will find you a covered option.
Breastfeeding families get more, not less
Fully breastfeeding mothers receive the largest food package, extra produce dollars, canned fish, and free breast pumps plus lactation support. If you're combination feeding, the clinic can adjust your category as your needs change — a phone call, not a new application. See the full benefit list.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch to a different brand?
Only within your state contract, or with medical documentation. If your baby genuinely does not tolerate the contract formula, that is a medical conversation with your pediatrician — and documented switches are common.
Does WIC cover formula for a whole year?
Yes — formula benefits run until the baby's first birthday, when the package transitions to milk and toddler foods.
What if I run out before the month ends?
Benefits are set by federal amount tables and do not top up mid-cycle. Call your clinic: they can review your feeding category and check whether a different package fits your baby better.
